Herringen 1 V 4 Vintage Clarets

Semi Final: Hamm Stadium, Sunday 24th May 2015, K.O 3:20pm
Report by Steve Bott

THIS was far and away the Clarets best performance of the tournament as they raced into a commanding 4-0 half-time lead.

Herringen just could not cope with Brad Maylett’s pace down the left and when he was brought down in the box just three minutes into the game, Liam Robinson stepped up to coolly slot home the penalty.

Then came the Clarets’ individual goal of the tournament when Graham Lancashire, or “Uncle Albert” as the bearded veteran had been dubbed by his team-mates, jinked into the box beating a man and running on before firing home in fine style. Not bad for a man who had been struggling with a stomach bug throughout the tournament!

Robinson hit the outside of a post with another penalty awarded after Maylett had once again been brought down in the box.

It mattered not as a minute later Maylett managed to scramble the ball home despite colliding with the Herringen goalkeeper.

Then came the Clarets’ move of the tournament. Good work by Ishy saw the ball swung into the area, Robinson laid the cross off, Alex Kevan performed a classy step-over allowing Jon Borland to run onto the ball and hammer it into the back of the net.

Herringen pulled a goal back from the penalty spot just two minutes into the second half, but the VCs held out well enough to allow Clarets’ fan and tour guide Sergeant Major Peter Briggs a run out for the last three minutes.

He didn’t let anyone down and one piece of Ronaldo-like skill on the touchline had the crowd in raptures. Yes I did say raptures, not ruptures!

TEAM (4-3-3): Lee – Hamilton, Oghani, Harrison, Hussein – Borland, Deary, Kevan – Lancashire, Robinson, Maylett.
