Alsager Town FC, Sunday 29th March 2015, K.O 2pm
Report by Steve Bott
THE Vintage Clarets emerged victorious after going 2-0 down in the first half.
In fact, after being down in the doldrums you could say they were walking on Eyres after an inspired performance from the boy (I use that term very loosely) David helped crown a breathtaking comeback.
Former Claret Steve Jones netted for the hosts early on but the road to recovery began when George Oghani stooped low to head in a Liam Robinson centre.
That was was quickly followed by the equaliser from VC captain John Deary.
Loafy delighted the capacity crowd by firing, or should that be shinning, the ball into the bottom corner following some confusion in the Alsager defence, only matched by that in John’s brain cell!
There were other chances for the VCs to score. Liam Robinson and Eyres had left their guide dogs on the sidelines however and it was 2-2 at half-time.
After the break a double from Eyres extended the VCs’ lead.
One of Eyres’ efforts was an absolute screamer, smashing into the roof of the net following a corner routine worked out methodically on the dance floor at the Revolution back in the day.
Alsager pulled another goal back to make it 4-3 and set up a nervy finish, but the VCs remained in control and went nap, as is their wont, when Eyres, who caused Alsager problems all afternoon, took on the full back once again and knocked a wonderful cross towards Brad Maylett.
Maylett nearly got on the end of it, but he tripped over his zimmer frame. That brought the house down and the laughter continued as the Alsager centre half prodded the ball past his own keeper – Brad said he was claiming it though!
The Vintage Clarets starting XI was: Richard Lee, Peter Mumby, Chris Clarke, Phil Eastwood, Dennis Hill, John Deary, Alex Kevan, Brad Maylett, George Oghani, Liam Robinson, David Eyres. Substitutes: Roger Eli, Gerry Harrison.
