THE Vintage Clarets are back in action on the smaller stage in a 7-a-side football tournament at Gawthorpe, Burnley FC’s training facility, this Sunday, 8th November, kick-off 5pm.
The teams taking part in what is a first venture for the VCs are Simon Jersey Ltd, Marks & Spencers Burnley, Airedale NHS Trust, Burnley Express and Paradigm Precision as well as the VCs of course.
Skipper John Deary, his midfield engine room partner Alex Kevan and a host of the triumphant European tournament winning side who took part in the annual veterans’ event in Hamm, Germany last May are expected to play.
Local striking heroes Andy Payton and Graham Lancashire may well be involved. Lanky lives in Padiham and Payton will forever be known as the Padiham Predator.
It should be a lively affair under the floodlights on the outdoor pitches at Gawthorpe which is directly off Padiham Road a few minutes drive down from the M65 motorway.
The tournament will be a welcome return for the VCs who have been out of action for over two months now after their 3-0 success against Kenanks United at Burnley Belvedere’s ground on August 23.
“It is an exciting event and will fill a gap until the charity games begin again in the New Year,” said John Deary.
